COWBOY & OCTOPUS
Jon
Scieszka
-繪
者:Lane
Smith

coast of Georgia
on the plantation of Ol’ Man Deboreaux; that’s what the enslaved people
called him behind his back. To his face, they called him “master.”
Jane was around sixteen years old in 1842. That spring, she
said, word spread among the enslaved that Ol’ Man Deboreaux had bought five
new Africans off the boat in Charleston.
From there, he sent them to a place behind Deep Woods to teach them how to
work in the fields and how to talk just like I’m talking to you right now.

Equador
(Miguel Sousa Tavares)
Summary
Luis Bernardo Valença, 37-year-old owner of a
trading and shipping firm is a single bonvivant who enjoys a comfortable
life amidst Lisbon’s society when in 1905 he
is asked to become governor of the tiny island
of São Tomé, Portugal’s
smallest colony of its vast colonial empire. The island mainly lives from
its cocoa plantations. The reason for his transfer are accusations by the
English for supporting slavery-like conditions on the island. However, the
English, themselves being owners of cocoa plantations in other countries,
are interested in preventing the export of cocoa from São Tomé for more
than humanitarian reasons. Valença, being a gentleman used to urban life in
Lisbon,
seems ill-prepared for the tasks awaiting him. When Portugal is forced to agree to
a British consul being sent to São Tomé, Valença’s counterpart, Mr.
David Jameson, arrives shortly after him, in order to audit the accusations
of slavery. Valença falls madly in love with Jameson’s beautiful young wife
Ann.
The author impressively describes the atmosphere of Lisbon’s society, the
decline of Portuguese colonialism, the tropical climate, the miserable
conditions on the island as well as the international economic and political
interests before the first World War. The tension of this gripping book is
held right through to the end and has fascinated many readers, who do not
usually spend their evenings reading a book. Equador has all the features
of a novel that will travel far.

SUITE SCARLETT
Maureen Johnson
Summary
Scarlett Martin has grown
up in a most unusual way. Her family owns the Hopewell,
a small hotel in the heart of New
York City. Her nineteen-year-old brother, Spencer,
is an out of work actor facing a family deadline to get his career in
order. Eighteen-year-old Lola has the delicate looks of a model, the
practical nature of a nurse, and a wealthy society boyfriend.
Eleven-year-old Marlene is the family terror with a tragic past.
When the Martins turn
fifteen, they are each expected to take over the care of a suite in the
once elegant, now shabby Art Deco hotel. For Scarlett’s fifteenth birthday, she gets
both a room called the Empire Suite, and a permanent guest named Mrs.
Amberson. Scarlett doesn’t quite know what to make
of this C-list starlet, world traveler, and aspiring autobiographer who
wants to take over her life. And when she meets Eric, an astonishingly
gorgeous actor who has just moved to the city, her summer takes a second unexpected
turn.
With Mrs. Amberson calling
the shots, Spencer’s
career to save, Lola’s love life to navigate
around, and Marlene’s prying eyes everywhere,
things won’t be easy. Before the summer is over,
Scarlett will have to survive a whirlwind of thievery, Broadway glamour,
romantic missteps, and theatrical deception.
The show, as they say, must
always go on . . . .

The Enzo Files (系列名)
1. Extraordinary People
2. The Critics
Peter May
Chinese Crime Writers’ Association)
Gil
Gil
Summary
Extraordinary People 簡介:
What has happened to Jacques
Gaillard? The brilliant teacher who trained some of France's best and brightest at the Ecole
Nationale d'Administration as future Prime Ministers and Presidents
vanished ten years ago, presumably from Paris. The mystery inspires a bet, one
that Enzo Macleod, a biologist teaching in Toulouse
instead of pursuing a brilliant career in forensics back home in Scotland
can ill afford to lose. The wager is that Enzo can find out what happened
to Jacques Gaillard by applying new science to an old case.
Enzo comes to Paris to meet journalist Roger Raffin,
the author of a book on seven celebrated unsolved murders, the assumption
being that Gaillard is dead. He needs Raffin's notes. And armed with these,
he begins his quest. It quickly has him touring landmarks such as the Paris catacombs and a chateau in Champagne, digging up relics and bones.
Yes, Enzo finds Jacques Gaillard's head. The artifacts buried with the
skull set him to interpreting the clues they provide and to following in
someone's footsteps--maybe more than one someone--after the rest of
Gaillard. And to reviewing some ancient and recent history. As with a
quest, it's as much discovery as detection. Enzo proves to be an ace
investigator, scientific and intuitive, and, for all his missteps, one who
hits his goals including a painful journey toward greater self-awareness.
The Critics
When the corpse of powerful American
wine critic Gil Petty turned up in southwest France, local cops were
perplexed: the body was dressed in the robes of a local fraternal
organization and appeared to have been practically pickled in wine. Four
years later, shortly after Enzo, who specializes in unsolvable murders,
reopens the case, another wine-saturated corpse is found. Petty had made
countless enemies in the wine world, and his ex-wife and daughter had few
kind words to say about him, but what connects him to the second killing?
Enzo's emotional drama with both his daughters and romantic attractions to
two charming ladies, plus tidbits about wine production and the art of wine
tasting, make this a full-bodied, satisfying read
