The author impressively describes the atmosphere of Lisbon’s society, the decline of Portuguese colonialism, the tropical climate, the miserable conditions on the island as well as the international economic and political interests before the first World War. The tension of this gripping book is held right through to the end and has fascinated many readers, who do not usually spend their evenings reading a book.
